Using PDF Embedder on a WordPress.com Site

Thinking about adding PDF Embedder to your WordPress.com site? Before you purchase or install anything, there are some important platform limitations you need to know about.

This guide explains which WordPress.com plans are compatible with PDF Embedder and what functionality is unavailable on that hosting environment.

WordPress.com vs. Self-Hosted WordPress

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) are different platforms with different levels of access. On WordPress.com, you do not have access to server configuration files such as .htaccess, security settings, or server-level tools. This closed environment creates real limitations for certain plugins, including PDF Embedder.

What Works and What Does Not on WordPress.com

No version of PDF Embedder can be installed on a free WordPress.com plan. Plugin installation requires a paid WordPress.com account.

On a paid WordPress.com plan, the free version and the basic PDF Embedder Premium plugin may work, but functionality is not guaranteed. The Secure PDFs feature, available on the Pro and Elite licenses, does not work reliably on WordPress.com. The secure storage system depends on server-level access that WordPress.com does not provide.

The Recommended Setup

For full compatibility with all PDF Embedder features, use a self-hosted WordPress site hosted by any provider other than WordPress.com. This gives you complete control over server settings and allows every feature of our PDF Embedder Premium plugin to work as intended.

If you are unsure about the difference between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress, WPBeginner’s comparison guide is a clear starting point.
