Understanding PDF Embedder and GDPR and CCPA Compliance

Running a website that serves visitors in Europe or California means data privacy compliance is not optional. If you rely on PDF Embedder to display documents, you need to know exactly what data the plugin collects, if any, from your site visitors.

This guide explains how PDF Embedder handles visitor data and where it stands with respect to GDPR and CCPA requirements.

What Data PDF Embedder Collects

The free version of PDF Embedder collects no personal data from your site visitors. The plugin’s only function is to render an interactive PDF viewer in the browser. No names, email addresses, IP addresses, or any other identifying information are stored.

View and Download Tracking in the Premium Version

If you enable tracking in your plugin settings, the plugin records the number of times each document is viewed or downloaded. This count is stored in your WordPress database as part of the document’s metadata. The only values stored are integers. No information about which visitor viewed or downloaded a document is recorded.

GDPR and CCPA Compliance Status

Because PDF Embedder does not collect or store any personal information about your site visitors, the plugin is fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does enabling view tracking identify individual visitors?

No. When view tracking is enabled in the Premium version, the plugin only stores a count of views and downloads. No visitor details such as names, email addresses, or IP addresses are recorded.

Do I need to mention PDF Embedder in my site’s privacy policy?

Because the plugin does not collect personal data, a specific disclosure is generally not required. That said, consult your legal advisor if you have specific compliance obligations for your jurisdiction.
