Running into an error when installing or updating PDF Embedder? Installation problems almost always fall into one of three categories discussed in this guide.
Safari unzips the ZIP file automatically
When downloading the plugin ZIP on a Mac using Safari, Safari may automatically unzip the file, leaving you with a folder instead of a ZIP archive. WordPress requires the ZIP to install a plugin, so the upload will fail.
To fix this:
- Open Safari > Preferences > General.
- Uncheck Open “safe” files after downloading.
- Go back to your account on WP-PDF.com and download the plugin file again.
The file will now download as a .zip archive ready for WordPress.
If you already have the unzipped folder, right-click it on your Mac and select Compress to recreate the ZIP without re-downloading.
Error: “The download doesn’t seem to be a ZIP file”
This WordPress error during plugin upload is caused by the same Safari issue above — the file has already been extracted. Follow the steps above to re-download with the correct setting enabled, then retry the installation.
Required: Free Plugin Missing
Our PDF Embedder Premium plugin requires the free PDF Embedder plugin to be installed and activated on the same site. Without it, the Premium plugin will not work.
You will need to install the free version for the Premium to work well.
Update failed: File Permissions Error
If automatic updates fail with a permissions error, the web server does not have write access to the plugin directory. Your hosting provider is best placed to fix the underlying permissions issue.
You can also update the plugin manually by downloading the plugin file and then installing it on your site.
Re-entering your license key should not be necessary after a manual reinstall.
