Accessibility and Screen Readers with PDF Embedder

Can visitors using screen readers or keyboard-only navigation access PDFs embedded with PDF Embedder? The viewer supports both input methods, with some practical limitations and a recommended approach for screen reader users.

This guide explains the current state of accessibility in the PDF Embedder viewer and the best practices for screen reader support.

Keyboard Navigation

The embedded viewer is fully navigable by keyboard. Visitors who use keyboard-only navigation can move between pages and use full-screen mode using the standard keyboard shortcuts, the same ones available to mouse users. For the complete list, see Keyboard Shortcuts for Full-Screen Mode.

Screen Reader Support

Some screen readers can read content from the embedded viewer. The plugin has been used successfully with JAWS.

For the most reliable screen reader experience, add a direct link to the PDF file below the embedded viewer. This gives screen readers a clean path to the original file, bypassing the viewer entirely. A standard WordPress link block or HTML anchor pointing to the PDF URL in your Media Library is all that is needed.

Note that adding a direct link makes the original PDF file accessible via URL. This approach is not compatible with the secure PDF feature; if you have secure mode active, a direct link defeats its protection. If you need both accessibility and file protection simultaneously, there is no current solution that satisfies both requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Below are some common questions about accessibility in PDF Embedder.

Does PDF Embedder meet WCAG accessibility standards?

The viewer supports keyboard navigation and has worked with some screen reader software, but it does not currently meet full WCAG 2.1 compliance. Accessibility improvements are planned for future versions.

Does the secure viewer work with screen readers?

Partially. Compatibility depends on the screen reader software and its ability to interact with the viewer. Adding a direct PDF link alongside the embed is the most reliable option for screen reader users, but this requires making the original file accessible.
